Day 158: Grassy Banks Campground, Big Bend Ranch State Park, TX

Sunny and warm.

I am happy to report that no one tried to get into this country during our Grassy Banks border watch last night. Not even a deer. There was however a lot of critter activity around our campsite, as evidenced by scat and at least three different types of footprints. We think it was coyote, ringtail, some sort of reptile, and possibly a beaver, the latter possibly leaving a dragging sort of mark. See the little hatch mark footprints near the top of the photo? Reptile? Bird?

This is a different type of ghost town, made of stone bricks. It is Terlingua, a quicksilver (mercury) mining town, between Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park.

We went to Big Bend National Park. Big Bend boasts the only national park which contains an entire mountain range – the Chisos Mountains.

We camped in the Chisos Basin early in the day. It turned out to be a great campground as it has flush toilets and good cell signal. We grilled steaks using charcoal and the grill in the picnic table shelter.
